“Sustainable Oasis Initiative” workshop, December 13, 2021

Updated: Nov 6, 2023

The National Agency for the Development of Oasis Zones and the Argan Tree (ANDZOA) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), organized a workshop on December 13, 2021 in Rabat under the theme “Sustainable Oasis Initiative: Potentialities and challenges of sustainable development of oasis ecosystems in a context of climate change”.

This workshop was part of: (i) the Sustainable Oasis Initiative presented at Cop22 in November 2016 in Marrakech and (ii) the Project for the revitalization of oasis agroecosystems in the Drâa-Tafilalet region (OASIL). Its overall objective was to highlight the efforts made in favor of oasis spaces and to contribute to raising awareness among all stakeholders concerned of the importance of converging actions to ensure sustainable development of the oasis ecosystem in order to improve resilience to climate change and continue to play their role in the future for humanity.

During this workshop, he was:

Presented the efforts deployed within the framework of the OASIL project aimed at sustainable management of natural resources, in this case biodiversity, soil and water in a context of climate change, through studies carried out on the subject on the ground. Such an objective showed the efforts initiated in the implementation of the Sustainable Oasis Initiative in terms of characterizing oasis agroecosystems;

Proposed and adopted a mode of institutionalization and governance of the Sustainable Oasis Initiative on a countrywide scale in preparation for a certain opening on a regional or even international scale.

Indeed, oasis ecosystems are a space for federating the efforts of several stakeholders at various levels of reflection, decision-making and daily practices. Thus, this workshop saw the participation of around 150 people bringing together elected officials, representatives of civil society, administrations and public establishments, educational and research establishments and beneficiaries of such ecosystem services as well as international and funding organizations.

It should be remembered that the Sustainable Oasis Initiative (SOI) was presented by Morocco at COP22, in Marrakech in November 2016. The objectives it aims for as well as the approach it proposes remain very topical, and this, because of the potential presented by oasis ecosystems and the challenges they encounter for their preservation and sustainable development in a context of climate change.

Since 2016, this initiative has been the subject of presentations at multiple national and international events. It sets itself the following objectives:

Better recognition of the specificities of the oasis ecosystem and the unique nature of its vulnerability;

The implementation of concerted actions to preserve the oasis heritage, particularly its biodiversity, its ecosystem and its human system;

Promoting the economic potential of oases in a vision of sustainable development.

If COP22 was an opportunity to launch the “Sustainable Oasis initiative”, it remains to be promoted through the following actions in particular:

  • Work for a coalition of countries and organizations concerned by the problem and the revitalization of oases;

  • Create a dedicated structure in charge of advocacy;

  • Create a dedicated fund, financed partly by member countries and organizations and partly by climate funds.Source :
